Flowers We Love: Dahlias

Flowers We Love: Dahlias

3rd Aug 2023

The flower world is made up of more than four seasons, there are mini ones that bridge the gap bringing about a whole new floral crop. As we head into high summer there’s one flower that shines as a true symbol of this transitional season - the dahlia. With its diverse array of shapes, sizes, and colors, the bloom has captured the hearts of florists and flower enthusiasts alike. As the dahlia frenzy gets underway, we’re taking a moment to appreciate this best-loved stem in all its forms.

Native to Mexico and Central America, these magical flowers come in a mind-boggling variety of shapes - some of our favourites include the spindly Cactus, sweet Pom Pom and of course the Cafe au Lait. The latter rivals peonies for being a blousy showstopper and its dinner-plate proportions make it a winner within supersize urns. This plethora makes the dahlia such versatile bloom - from petite bud vases up to blockbuster installations.

The spectrum of colour varieties on offer beautifully represents the two seasons it effortlessly nestles between - the heady coral pinks of summer meet the rich plummy tones of early autumn. One minute they’re popping next to fiery zinnias and the next, oozing sophistication with chocolate cosmos.

There’s still plenty of time to enjoy this bloom which is a welcome reminder of the ever-changing beauty of nature and the boundless possibilities in the world of floristry.
