Flowers We Love: Fritillaria

Flowers We Love: Fritillaria

11th Mar 2023

Amongst the classic floral hits of spring (tulips, daffs and muscari to name a few) arrive an altogether more mysterious genus - the beguiling fritillaria. These enchanting flowers have long held the attention of florists and gardeners alike, with their contrasting array of varieties lending themselves to a host of arrangements and flowerbeds - whether they’re for an ensemble of delicate bud vases or to take prominence within an ornate border.

What is it then that makes these stems so captivating? Take the Snakeshead Fritillary (Fritillaria Meleagris), like many flowers have almost anthropomorphic characteristics - the bowing, intricately patterned head, appearing like a pretty lace bonnet. This delicate specimen provides lots of interest for sophisticated spring wedding bouquets - its rich plummy colour making a welcome alternative to the pastel brights of the season.

Then there’s the Crown Imperial (Fritillaria Imperialis) - statuesque and majestic, which initially seems like the polar opposite to its aforementioned dainty family member. On closer inspection however, its umbrella of bright orange petals resemble the bell-shape trait of the Snakeshead kin. These regal blooms sit proudly in ornate urns particularly those inspired by the revered Dutch Masters style of floral design.

Inkeeping with its bewitching relatives - the Persian Lily (Fritillaria Persica) has its own distinctive set of characteristics. Deep damson-hued bells cascade down tall stems that have a penchant for contorting into undulating shapes. It’s this unruly nature that often draws florists to featuring them within original spring displays such as the recent design by our imaginative Contracts team created for prestigious surroundings of InterContinental Park Lane (not forgetting the equally eye-catching Star of Bethlehem.)
